Utah State Parks and Recreation recently launched the “Nobody is Invincible” safety campaign. The campaign, launched through Utah State Park and Recreation’s Boating and Off-Highway Vehicle Programs, encourages Utahns to wear a life jacket while boating and a helmet while riding OHVs this summer to avoid injuries and fatalities.
Boating Fatality Facts
- 80 percent of boating related fatalities in Utah involved people not wearing life jackets.
- As of April 10, 2017, Utah has already experienced two boating fatalities this year.
- Utah ranks in the Top 10 for boating fatalities with 11.1 deaths per 100,000 registered boats.
- 75 percent of drownings occur with wave heights less than two feet.
- Nearly 50 percent of national drownings occur in lakes and reservoirs.
OHV Injury Facts
- Between 2014 – 2016, the University of Utah Hospital saw a total of 166 OHV injuries, accounting for three percent of total trauma related injuries.
- As of May 17, 2017, Utah has experienced four OHV fatalities this year.
- In Utah, 58 percent of riders surveyed reported they frequently wear helmets when riding an OHV.
- Only 38 percent of riders surveyed reported their children has completed the “Know Before You Go!” certification course, even though 88 percent reported they were aware of the law.
