The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Public Lands Policy Coordinating Office (PLPCO), has 2 seasonal positions (no benefits) available. These appointments will last from approximately May – October 2024, or as the incumbents are available. Housing is not provided.

Job Duties
The incumbent in this position will be responsible for driving and filming roads as part of the ongoing R.S.2477 litigation. Roads are in remote areas of the state on Bureau of Land Management land, with a primary focus in Wayne, Garfield, Kane, and San Juan counties. Conditions of the roads vary from paved to highly technical routes (and everything in between), so strong off-road driving skills are required. This position also requires the incumbent to accurately and consistently record GPS tracks and 360-degree video with an iPad and GoPro Max. Training on the proper workflow will be provided and must be followed. You can visit accessmap.utah.gov to view the final product to which you will be contributing.

Job Requirements and Skills
The successful applicant will have the following skills and characteristics:

  • Familiar with driving 4WD vehicles and comfortable on challenging, technical terrain.
  • Self-reliant and comfortable solving problems with minimal to no communication.
  • Comfortable with technology, including smartphones, iPads, GoPro cameras, Garmin inReach, and other devices.
  • Experience collecting data and understanding the importance of complete, accurate data collection.
  • Overnight travel up to 5 days will be required. Vehicles will be provided and travel costs (food and lodging) will be reimbursed.
  • Hours will vary by week. Occasional overtime will be required.
  • Dispersed camping may be required. The incumbent is to provide their own camping equipment, or PLPCO will help make arrangements upon hire.
  • Work requires physical exertion, including sitting in a vehicle driving on rough terrain for up to 10 hours per day. Requires the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, and lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.

Preferred:

  • Extensive experience driving 4WD vehicles on rough terrain across Utah’s desert landscapes.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certified
  • Experience camping or backpacking without amenities
  • Familiarity with Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly! principles, and commitment to leaving a location better than you found it.
  • Ability to successfully troubleshoot technological issues.
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates who live in Southern Utah.

Other
This is a unique position that allows the incumbent to visit and explore some of the most remote places in Utah. The incumbent must be responsible, respectful, and have a clean driving record. Long days will be spent in the vehicle with a colleague, so the ability to get along with others, communicate, and quickly resolve conflict is essential.
