The Utah Department of Natural Resources has seasonal positions (no benefits) available in Richfield, Utah. This appointment will last from approximately May to September 2023 (weather and funding permitting). Housing is not provided.

Examples of Duties
Under the supervision of the Area Forester job duties may include but are not limited to timber cruising, stand delineation, the establishment of forest inventory plots, forest stand examination, marking timber sales and sale boundaries, stand data entry, insect and disease surveys, and tree planting. Job duties may require working closely with other natural resources agencies, private landowners, contractors, and the general public.

Job Requirements and Skills
Basic forestry principles; tools, and methods used in measuring tree attributes and gathering forest stand exam data; forest and urban insects and diseases. Must be willing to learn methods and strategies for forest inventory. Computer applications, familiarity with navigation/mapping, GPS, and interpersonal skills are preferred. Identify Utah’s major forest and tree species; work effectively with co-workers, landowners, and partners; communicate effectively orally and in writing; operate a 4×4 vehicle on one-track logging roads in mountainous terrain. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preference will be given to applicants who are certified cruisers and have field experience OR graduates from an accredited two-or four-year college or university with a major study in forest management, forest ecology, forest watershed management, or related fields.

Other
Arduous, off-trail hiking in hilly to steep, mountainous terrain for extended periods of time. Stand densities and under-story vegetation will vary. Work will involve considerable travel with outdoor assignments under varying weather conditions. Camping may be required on some project assignments. This is an entry-level job. The work schedule will be 40 hours per week typically Monday-Thursday, but schedules may fluctuate depending on work conditions.
