Time frame: April 15–Aug. 30, 2024 (possible extension to Sept. 30)

Housing: Provided at no cost

The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources, has a seasonal fisheries position available (no benefits) located at Bear Lake in Garden City, Utah. Housing is provided at no cost at Bear Lake’s Swan Creek Cabin, and the technician must live in provided housing or within the Bear Lake Valley. Preference will be given to applicants who are able to begin full time work on or before April 15.

Examples of duties

  • Operate cutthroat trout spawning trap
  • Assist biologist with aquatic/riparian habitat project work, cutthroat trout stocking, hydroacoustic sampling, gill-net surveys and stream-surveys using electrofishing equipment
  • Maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities
  • Monitoring water quality using a YSI meter at community fisheries
  • Conducting angler surveys at various community fisheries and Bear Lake
  • Collecting, analyzing and entering various data
  • Participating in public outreach events

Work schedules can vary, and weekend work is expected and required from April 15 through June 15.

Job requirements and skills

The incumbent must maintain a professional demeanor while representing the DWR and be able to communicate effectively, work efficiently without supervision, organize/prioritize tasks, proficiently identify fish and safely operate four-wheel-drive vehicles, motor boats and ATVs. Must have a valid driver’s license. Computer skills (e.g., Excel, Word) and maintenance/mechanical skills are highly desirable.

Other

Working conditions often involve strenuous work in inclement weather conditions and in streams and on boats on a large lake, and may include camping in primitive conditions. Applicants must successfully pass a criminal history background check upon hire.
