Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands (FFSL), is hiring two seasonals to help manage
sovereign lands in the Bear River Area (primarily at Bear Lake, with some work at Bear River
and Great Salt Lake). This is a 40-hour per week position that will be filled from May to
September(flexible start and end dates), with the possibility of extending into the fall
part-time depending on FFSL project tasks.
Duties
Seasonal technicians are responsible for a wide variety of duties related to management of
sovereign land resources at Bear Lake, Bear River, and Great Salt Lake. Duties include:
● Manage numerous noxious and invasive weed species via chemical and mechanical
methods (e.g., using backpack and ATV sprayers to apply herbicide, hand-pulling,
brush cutting, cut-stump treatments)
● Collect invasive plant treatment data throughout the summer using ArcGIS Field Maps
application
● Identify many native and nonnative plantspecies and document plant communities
via mapping and plantspecimen collection
● Operate boats, jetskis, and kayaks to access sovereign lands and collectsubmerged
aquatic plant community data
● Educate recreationists aboutsovereign land resources and rules
● Assist with various projects, such as posting informational signage, documenting
activities orstructures on sovereign land, creating outreach materials, writing reports,
and othertasks depending on skills and abilities
● Collaborate with agency partners such as Division of Wildlife Resources, Utah State
Parks, Box Elder County, etc. (e.g., participate in spray days, assist with projects)
● Assist other FFSL programs with their projects (e.g., fuel reduction work with the
Forestry program, low-tech process based restoration)
Job Requirements and Skills
● Driver’s license
● Availability to work flexible hours during the summer(i.e., four 10-hour days
Monday–Thursday, the occasional 12-hour day)
● Ability to perform physical work in variable terrain and weather conditions (e.g.,
walking with a 40 lb backpack sprayer, sitting, standing, lifting, paddling)
● Ability to work effectively with others
● Ability to stay on task and work independently with limited directsupervision
● Good people skills and the ability to listen, inform, and work with the public in a
professional manner
● Ability to safely operate and trailer ATVs, UTVs, motorboats, and small watercrafts.
Previous experience is highly desired; training will be provided as needed.

FFSL encourages seasonal technicians to pursue opportunities to build their knowledge
and skills. Below are the trainings/certifications that could be obtained, depending on
interest and availability of the seasonal employee and availability of these trainings in
spring 2025.
● Wilderness First Aid
● Wildland Fire Chainsaws course (S-212)
● Red Card training
● Pesticide Applicator License
