Overview: The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Outdoor Recreation, has a part-time position (no benefits) available at the Outdoor Recreation Maintenance Shop in Salt Lake City, Utah. Housing is not provided.
As a Mechanic Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced mechanics to diagnose and repair recreational equipment (such as off-highway vehicles, trailers, and boats). This entry-level position is designed to provide hands-on training and develop your skills in the mechanics field.

Examples of Duties
The primary aim of this apprenticeship is to prepare you for a future role as a DNR mechanic by addressing workforce shortages in the industry. With dedication and training, you could advance into a mechanic position within a few years.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist seasoned mechanics in diagnosing and repairing recreational equipment.
- Perform initial tasks such as cleaning, organizing, and servicing small equipment.
- Help with picking up parts and supplies as needed.
- Participate in external training programs to enhance your skills and knowledge.
- Support general upkeep and maintenance of the workshop.
- Answer calls and provide assistance as required.
Qualifications
- Strong interest in mechanics and recreational equipment.
- Ability to work as part of a team and follow instructions.
- Willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
- Basic mechanical aptitude is a plus, but not required.
Job Requirements and Skills
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid Utah Driver’s license at the time of employment. Applicant should have the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team; be able to follow both oral and written instructions; be willing to perform general upkeep and maintenance, use basic hand tools, operate small equipment such as leaf blowers and pressure washers, and be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Preference: Applicants with interest in maintenance, and those with experience in Construction, Maintenance, Janitorial/custodial/landscaping, and customer service industries.

Applicants must be willing to work in an outdoor setting. Applicants must successfully pass a criminal history background check upon hire.
Work requires physical exertion; may require standing, walking over rough surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and lifting objects up to 50lbs. in a recurring manner or for a long period of time.
