The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources, has 6–7 seasonal wildlife technician positions (no benefits) available at the Washington County Field Office in Hurricane, Utah. This 12-week appointment will last from March 31 to June 20, 2025. Housing is not provided.

Job duties

Wildlife technicians are needed to assist primarily with population monitoring of desert tortoises within southwestern Utah. Primary work will include desert tortoise transect surveys, radio-telemetry and translocation within the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area and Snow Canyon State Park. Other minor tasks may include:

  • Reptile and amphibian surveys
  • Desert tortoise clearance surveys
  • Restoration-related projects
  • Native fish monitoring and distribution surveys
  • Other recovery and conservation project implementation

The majority of the work will include surveying and marking desert tortoises using distance sampling, radio telemetry, translocation and native reptile surveys.

Job requirements and skills

Applicants must demonstrate an interest in native wildlife management and conservation, particularly in native reptiles, amphibians and fish. Experience in population monitoring techniques and habitat monitoring with a completed degree in biological sciences, ecology, zoology, wildlife, fisheries or a closely related field is preferred.

Applicants must be able to work as part of a team, follow set protocols and accurately record data. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and commit to the three-month time frame, from April to mid-June.

Other

This position requires hiking up to 8 miles a day over rough terrain, and working long hours in extreme heat and adverse weather. Applicants must also be willing to work Monday through Friday on a flexible field schedule, working 8–10 hours a day.
