The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources, has multiple seasonal positions (no benefits) available at the Hardware Wildlife Education Center. This appointment will last from approximately Sept. 16, 2024, to April 30, 2025. Housing is not provided. HWEC is located 18 miles east of Hyrum, Utah, an approximately 20- to 30-minute drive.
Job duties
- Teach grade school field trips Wednesdays and Fridays from December to February
- Develop and conduct wildlife-themed weekend community programs
- Staff the front desk at the Education Center, providing customer service and reception in person and on the phone
- Interact with visitors, providing interpretive talks on sleigh rides and during family education programs at the Center
- Develop and deliver community education programs during the fall, winter and spring seasons
- Research and develop interpretive labels and assist in developing interpretive displays
- Complete nightly and weekly cleaning tasks; shovel snow and salt walkways; operate a snow shovel, snow blower and salt spreader
- Other duties as assigned
Job requirements and skills
Applicant must have a valid Utah driver’s license at the time of employment and pass a criminal background check. Applicant should have the ability to work independently in a visitor services-centered environment.
Also, the applicant should have:
- A basic understanding of wildlife, wildlife biology and education
- The ability to read and interpret lesson plans and translate them into fun, engaging field trip activities for students
- An understanding of outdoor classroom management and instructional methods
- The ability to work with classroom teachers to provide quality, hands-on outdoor instruction
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in front desk management and reception
- The ability to troubleshoot, think quickly on your feet and stay organized
- Interest in and the ability to develop and deliver fun, family activities centered on wildlife
- Ability to research and prepare wildlife interpretation and educational activities
Preference may be given to an individual seeking a BS degree or who has a BS degree or equivalent experience.

Successful applicants will begin working as soon as possible and start no later than Monday, Sept. 16.
This position is part time and intermittent with the potential for rehiring next year. Applicants must be available to work weekdays in September and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (Sundays being negotiable) from October to April, with some weekdays. Please review schedule below before you apply.

- Sept. 17–20: Natural Resource Field Days, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Logan Canyon
- October: Friday, Saturday and Sunday shifts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (first, second and fourth weekend)
- November: Friday, Saturday and Sunday shifts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (second, third and fourth weekend)
- December–February: ALL Friday, Saturday and Sunday shifts from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- March: Friday, Saturday and Sunday shifts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., TBD
- April: Friday, Saturday and Sunday shifts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., TBD
The Hardware Wildlife Education Center is a 30-minute drive from Hyrum, up Blacksmith Fork Canyon. Winter-weather and wildlife driving conditions exist. Carpool opportunities may be available on some days, but not all days. Work is a combination of indoor and outdoor tasks, in all weather conditions.
Work requires the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach and lift moderately heavy items. Incumbent must be able to work in extreme and adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, wind, snow, ice, rain, etc.), as well as in cold water, on slippery surfaces and in cramped areas.
