The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources, has one seasonal position (no benefits) available at Wahweap State Fish Hatchery in Big Water, Utah. This appointment will last from approximately Sept. 1 to Nov. 8, 2024. Housing is provided.

Examples of duties

Assist in the operation of Wahweap State Fish Hatchery. Duties involve daily feeding and care of multiple warmwater fish species and western (boreal) toads, daily monitoring of water chemistry and quality, harvesting ponds using seines and dip nets, stocking of fish to waterbodies throughout the state of Utah, assisting in the spawning of catfish, cleaning ponds and raceways, and assisting in necropsies. Additional duties include maintenance of buildings, grounds and ponds; as well as groundskeeping work and other duties as assigned.

Job requirements and skills

  • Education with a background in biology or a related field
  • Ability to collect and record scientific data
  • Familiarity with wildlife-specific computer automation programs, machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair and maintenance
  • Ability to follow written and/or oral instructions, applicable laws, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures.
  • Maintain and/or repair tools and equipment; know principles and practices of facilities operations, maintenance and management.
  • Perform a variety of general maintenance activities and ensure compliance with contract terms, policies and procedures, etc.
  • Computer word processing software, as well as principles, theories, and practices of wildlife sciences.
  • Identify various fish species.
  • Communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Have a basic knowledge of fisheries management, limnology and fish cultural operations.

Preference will be given to an individual seeking a BS degree or has a BS degree in a related field of study.

Physical requirements: Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand, walk over rough surfaces, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach and lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.

Working Conditions:  Incumbent must be able to work in extreme and adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, wind, snow, ice, rain, etc.); work long hours in hip or chest waders; work in cold water, on slippery surfaces, and in cramped areas; and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Miscellaneous:  Some travel is required.
